Somalia Internet Speed Appetite: Businesses Demanding Faster Connectivity
From dial-up to 3G and now onto fibre optic links, Somalia's internet penetration is growing fast. Each expansion of bandwidth has been driven by rising demand for more and more data. As Mohamed Hirmoge reports, even the current fibre optic link is apparently not enough to meet demand.

Somalia's largest telco announces plans to extend 4G network
Somalia's largest telecoms operator, Hormuud Telecom, has announced expansion plans. The telco is aiming to expand 4G network access across the country by 2023. Millions of rural Somalis still rely on Hormuud's 2G network. Hormuud began expanding its 4G network capacity in 2015 in partnership with the Somali ministry of telecommunications, which estimates that 70% of Somalia's 15 million population now have access to 4G internet. Hormuud's aim for total 4G expansion is in line with current government commitments. The government's National ICT Policy pledges to reach total 4G coverage between 2024 and 2025.

Fibre-optic cable damage costs Somalia $10 million a day
Somalia's government says the ongoing internet outage is costing the country 10 million dollars a day. It's caused by damage to an undersea fibre-optic cable. Authorities say the cable is being fixed, and expect services to be restored this week. After more than 20 years of conflict, internet usage is still low in Somalia. Only 1-point-6 percent of the population was online in 2014. That same year, 3G mobile services in southern Somalia were cut off due to threats from al-Shabaab militants. The ban has remained in place ever since, making satellite internet the only viable option for most users.
